Registered midwives have combined their expertise with a fetal medicine and obstetric consultant and an anaesthetist to create an online, on demand antenatal education platform for parents-to-be.
The eLearning course contains over seven hours of antenatal education, underpinned by evidence-based and clinically accurate information, designed to empower parents-to-be to make their own decisions.
The on demand, eLearning course from My Expert Midwife was developed based on the team’s experience of delivering online antenatal education to more than 5,000 expectant parents. The course contains 137 topics that can be accessed at any time to fit in to parents-to-be’s schedules and can be paused or repeated if they want to recap a topic. The programme covers the physiology of pregnancy and birth, as well as discussing complicated pregnancies and births which may require medical interventions, how to navigate the maternity system and includes practical advice on all key areas that are important to parents-to-be. Topics covered include: options, choices and consent in pregnancy; the third trimester; creating an adaptable birth plan; practical preparations; perineal massage and colostrum harvesting, pain relief; stages of labour; birthing your baby vaginally; birthing your baby surgically (C-section); induction of labour; the golden hour; postpartum recovery and a section especially for birth partners. There are also supplementary topics which include breathing techniques, emergencies and what will happen if a baby is born unwell. Interactive content using quizzes, eBooks, guides and checklists is also included, to suit all types of learning styles. The programme also comes with unlimited access to the My Expert Midwife online MEMbers club, with forums moderated by registered midwives.
Lesley Gilchrist, registered midwife and co-founder of My Expert Midwife said: “As midwives we know the importance of quality antenatal education and want to ensure that parents-to-be can access clinically accurate antenatal education that reflects current maternity care.
“Our programme gives an honest, no-fluff overview of what happens in labour and birth – and how to manage if things don’t go to plan, and includes specialist sessions from experts including a Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics Consultant and a Consultant Anaesthetist.
“Thousands of parents-to-be have benefitted from our evidence-based parent education, but this is the first time our classes will be available on demand, to fit in with everyone’s schedule and so parents-to-be can learn at their own pace.”
The content of antenatal education is not regulated, so it is important for parents-to-be to seek out high quality, evidence based educational content that reflects the current practice in maternity care and incorporates evidence based guidelines and recommendations based on the latest research. My Expert Midwife’s on demand antenatal eLearning course is available at myexpertmidwife.com for an introductory price of £49 (usually £65) for ten months’ access and unlimited access to the MEMbers club.
