As part of its commitment to effective swab management, Central Medical Supplies (CMS) has developed the Swabsafe™ system, a modern alternative to the swab rack. Swabsafe™ is designed to assist with accurate swab counting and make swab weighing easier. The swab management system also helps eliminate the risk posed to operating theatre personnel by the unnecessary handling of contaminated swabs and ultimately protects patients.
The need to effectively address the issue of retained items is now more pertinent than ever, as the number of swabs used in operating theatres continues to rise due to the increased demand on services. NHS England’s provisional summary of Never Events, reported as occurring between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023, shows there were 16 surgical and 32 virginal swab incidents during this period. The swabs were all identified as being retained foreign objects post procedures.
The Swabsafe™ system complies with Health and Safety requirements and is the only system that meets with the Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) guidelines. The system is safe, hygienic and easy to use. In an independent audit, the production of Swabsafe™ was deemed to be as sustainable as it can potentially be, as it’s produced entirely from recycled post-consumer plastic (rPET).
Swabsafe™ containers come in three sizes – small, medium and large – and each is divided into five sections. The scrub practitioner can directly discard each dirty swab into an individual section. Once all five sections are used, the swab-tie is added to the Swabsafe™ container and the lid is then secured. When the lid is applied securely to a full container it traps air borne bacteria and eliminates evaporation from the swabs. Mobile stands are also available, to fit each of the three Swabsafe™ container sizes, along with compatible electronic weighing scales.
